WHAT MAKES SOME TEAMS SUCCESSFUL AND OTHERS A DISASTER?

Chances are your life is full of teams and the people on them. Whether in business, marriage, or family, teams can accomplish more together or quickly fall into dysfunction. Teams are as different as the people in them.

Over the years, we have been part of a wide variety of teams including a family business, a pioneer spirited NGO, a get-er-done startup business, an established service industry, an educational program, an ERP software provider, and this family team of ours with two little tykes. More recently we have worked with over 50 business and non-profit teams across multiple continents and cultures.

Whew! So how do we navigate communication and tasks and relationships on these different teams? What makes some teams successful and others a disaster? How do we eliminate the stressors and bad cycles and build productive teams?

Quite a few years ago my own team was stressed, distrusting, and inching close to burn out. I turned cynical and dove into discouragement. Thankfully our team and our leader (can we give a shout out to all brave leaders!) recognized the need for change, invited a coach, worked extremely hard, and I’m still amazed at the growth that followed.

Somewhere along the way I discovered I love facilitating events where teams can grow and thrive – while having fun together! Over 100 workshops later, I’m all about helping your team learn the human skills they need to perform. And giving you the support you need to build a successful team.

As I work with people in challenging team environments all over the world, I see that the team stressors I observe are not unique. Many of us struggle and share common problems. I certainly don’t profess to know everything about team but I have seen again and again the rewards of hard work and the thrill of being part of an empowered, energized, and life-giving team.

I often hear people says things like:

“We avoid difficult conversations with each other.” “I want to be a more effective leader.” “Trust is broken on our team.” “We need to improve our communication.” “I have difficulty understanding my leader.” “Our team feels stuck and lacks momentum.” “Our differences are just too big.” “I want to equip my team to succeed.”

And so Team Verve was born. What is Verve you might ask? In short it is life, energy, motivation, and passion. It is the strength to endure when things get done tough and the magic that occurs when individuals work together. We believe verve is the mark of any winning team culture.
